With the summer months fast drawing to a close, the weather still held fair at Falmouth Golf Club last week for the Bearne Bowl, writes David Holland.

There were a total of 104 entrants and although conditions were good there was a record number of 29 no recorded scores on the day.

In third place was former Captain Tony Drew, who had a very steady round which saw him one stroke behind the eventual winner and he must be kicking himself for playing from the wrong tee on the fourth, which cost him a two-shot penalty.

Tony has been playing very consistently and has had his handicap cut in the last three competitions. In second place, with a score 66, which included a level par back nine was Falmouth’s answer to Ernie, Andy Morris.

He is the fastest Clotted Cream man in the West, and having broken his own record for deliveries on Saturday morning, he then proceeded to shoot the lowest gross score of the day, with a 75.

In first place, also with a net 66, but with a better back nine, was 10 pin bowling guru, Richard Harris.  It is his first strike of the year and sees him as the Kingpin on the Bearne Bowl board for the next 12 months.

Results : 1st, Richard Harris 66; 2nd, Andy Morris 66; 3rd, Tony Drew 67; 4th, Pete Brierley 68.

This week’s competition was the Baragwaneth Cup and Summer was back in force, hardly any breeze and clear skies meant for perfect playing conditions and none of the usual excuses.

In third place with 39 pts was Falmouth Pilot Tristan Gurd.

He navigated himself perfectly around the course, avoiding all the hidden dangers and when he finally moored up in the safe haven of the clubhouse, he had recorded a very competitive 39pts.

Second place went to Club stalwart Brian Craig, who shot a gross 74 for his 40 points.

He has been playing well over the last few weeks and has been waiting for a good score in a competition.  He was however pipped to the trophy by early starter John Trevithick.

John maintains he had the worst of the weather once again and that may have contributed to his blob at the first hole, although the fact that it was probably still dark won't have helped.

He recovered well however and produced a level par back nine, which included birdies at the last two holes, for his final score of 41 points, which was enough to secure his victory.

Results : 1st, John Trevithick 41pts, 2nd Brian Craig 40pts, 3rd Tristan Gurd 39pts, 4th Adam Pryor 38pts, 5th Andrew Kemp 38pts.
