Club’s £2,000 award boost

Wendron Cricket Club has fought off stiff competition from hundreds of other local groups across the UK and Ireland to win £2,000 worth of B&Q products. The club will use the award to make its clubhouse more energy efficient and to improve the site by adding additional plants. B&Q will provide materials to help the club save energy, conserve nature and support local culture and heritage.

B&Q’s One Planet Living Awards aim to make a difference to local communities with awards of up to £10,000 in materials for projects that support the following themes; save energy, conserve nature, support local culture and heritage, or grow our own. To celebrate the UK’s leading home improvement and garden centre retailer’s 40th Birthday in 2009, the awards will support 40 projects this year with one winner of £10,000, four winners of £5,000 and 35 winners of £2,000.

Wendron Cricket Club was formed in 1949 and is currently situated in the heart of rural West Cornwall. The ten acre site includes cricket and football facilities and is used by three senior cricket teams, five adult football teams and approximately 150 young people aged 7-18 years.

Work is due to begin at the site later this month and will be completed by the end of September. Volunteers have plans to insulate the clubhouse roof and plant various shrubbery on a bank adjacent to the cricket pitch.

Brian Stutt from B&Q Penryn added, “We are delighted that Wendron Cricket Club has won the £2,000 award and look forward to working with them on the project.
