CONSTANTINE 127 PENZANCE Constantine hosted Penzance on a blustery but sunny day at Boulder Parc on Saturday, Scott Thompson won the toss and with a high score in mind, elected to bat.
However, plans started to change after going three wickets down in the 7th over, losing Thompson, Darren Griffiths and Richard Kellow.
Graham Griffiths followed shortly after getting caught at backward point, Russell Weetch and Richard Waters put on 24 and 14 respectively in a valuable knock which doubled Constantine’s score, however some good bowling and fielding from Penzance made life tough for the 'Tine middle and late order, 10 from Shaun Williams, a quick 16 from Paul Burton, and a seven not-out from Chris Dengler saw the home side creep past the batting point mark of 120 to finish on 127. Andre Otto was the pick of the bowlers taking what could be, at tea, a possible match winning 6-19, well supported by J Stevens taking 3-25. During the tea break Constantine were reasonably happy with the posted score and thought that it was a defendable total on a tricky wicket. The Penzance innings got underway in a very similar style to the Constantine innings with the away side also losing three wickets by the 7th over, courtesy of a superb catch by Chris Dengler behing the stumps followed by an outrageous, diving, one handed catch at backward point by Darren Griffiths.
The Penzance middle order offered a steadier ship for the visitors with Andre Otto and Craig Nicholls both reaching the 30s, Alan Dengler bowled a patient spell of 12 overs in the middle of the innings going for only 21 runs, the tight bowling giving the home side a sniff of victory. Leaving themselves four and over Penzance still had it all to do with Russell Weetch picking up the big wicket of Otto for 31 and Griffiths the wicket of Nicholls for 39, Weetch finished his remarkably tight spell with 1- 15 from 12 which saw the visitors needing 30 runs from the last five overs, with two new batsmen at the crease. However some hard hitting from the Penzance tail end and some bowling in the wrong areas from Constantine the away side finally needed seven from the last two overs, an outside edge for four eventually brought victory for Penzance, reaching the target with eight balls to spare.
Graham Griffiths finished with 4-27 well supported by Dengler and Weetch who kept it tight when the going was tough. Constantine will feel they never had enough runs on the board and the two overs not batted at the end of their innings may have not helped, however a good display in the field from both sides helped to produce a superb game of cricket. With Constantine slipping to 12 points of leaders Barripper after Saturday, next week’s game is the big fixture at Barripper, where a win is a must for Constantine.
