PORTHLEVEN Rangers entertained Carharrack Reserves in the Whirlwind Sports Falmouth-Helston League's Terry Jennings Cup and with their home record had every belief that they would progress further.

The conditions were again not favourable for good football with a stiff end-to-end breeze blowing.

Carharrack elected to play with the breeze in the first half and pushed Rangers on to the back foot early on, but never really created any real opportunities to score.

It was no surprise when Rangers broke away and with the pace of the front pair of Richards and Chambers they soon took the lead. It was Gary Richards who drove at the defence and took his shot early curling the ball beyond the 'keeper and putting Rangers one up.

Rangers, playing against the wind tried to keep the ball on the ground and into feet at every opportunity and as a result Rangers' Martin Wortley and Adrian Willey saw plenty of the ball and provided Rangers with a constant supply forward.

Richard Chambers got in behind the defence and he to made no mistake in finding the net to put Rangers two up. This was soon followed by a second for Richards and when the whistle blew for the half time break Rangers led 3-0.

With the wind at their backs Rangers dominated the second half. It was not long before the lead was extended and this time it was Chambers' turn to knock the ball home after the defence failed to clear their box from a corner. This goal was no more than the Rangers play deserved and all but put this game beyond the visitors.

It was Richards again who added to the score when he completed his hat-trick, again giving the goalkeeper no chance with his finish. The front man now appears to back to his early season form after returning from injury a few weeks ago.

Carharrack did manage to get a consolation goal late on after a mistake at the back.

It was to prove the final action of the game and when the whistle blew it was Rangers whose name went into the hat for the semi final draw.

The game ended on a sour note, however, when a Carharrack player turned his knee badly and was had to leave the field in an ambulance.

All the Rangers playerssend their regards and wish him a speedy recovery and extend their thanks to the emergency services for their support.
