Eoin Morgan notched his 36th one-day international half century as England coasted towards victory against Australia at The Oval.

Australia were fighting to move past March’s ball-tampering scandal in their return to international action in the first of five one-day clashes with England.

Captain Morgan had reached an unbeaten 66 by the halfway stage of England’s innings, with the hosts 135 for three chasing 215 for victory.

Joe Root was still at the crease with 35 as England eased past a testing opening, which had seen them reduced to 38 for three.

Jason Roy was removed before England had put runs on the board, with Alex Hales trapped leg before by Michael Neser for just five.

Jonny Bairstow holed out to Travis Head off Kane Richardson’s bowling to spoil a promising 28, but then Morgan and Root steadied the ship.
