The PenFal Panthers pool team will represent Cornwall at the national championships after they won the inter-league pool competition held at Bodmin on Saturday.

The PenFal team is made up of ten players: Les Rundle (c), Will Lawry, Martin Hendy, Jason Griger, Anthony Williams, Darren Griffiths, Alan Edney, Ian Williams, Dave Bennett and Jon Perrow.

The Panthers, having finished fourth in the league, had to face a team representing Truro in their first round game of the competition.

The Panthers got down to business immediately, winning the first six frames. Truro could only follow as Panthers led all the way to the finish line of 14 frames.

Anthony Williams and Dave Bennett provided the most wins in the first round match with three each.

This easy win put the Panthers into the semi-finals against a team from St Austell.

St Austell immediately started winning frames, but by the end of the second session, having played 18, all was equal at 9-9 with two more sessions left.

The Panthers played better in the third session winning it by seven frames to two, giving them a 16-11 advantage. The last session went a bit scrappy, but the Panthers managed to win the three frames needed, out of the seven played, giving them an overall 19-15 win.

Anthony Williams again produced the most wins for the Panthers with three out of four. Will Lawry and Darren Griffiths also won three frames each.

In the final, the Panthers played hosts Bodmin. The Panthers, looking a very tired side, lost the first session by seven frames to two.

The second session was a much tighter affair, but the home team eventually won that 5-4 giving them a 12-6 lead. The third session commenced with some inspirational play and this helped to liven up the Panthers, who went on to win the session 6-3 making the scoreline of 15-12 to the home side The Panthers then went into the fourth, and last, session full of confidence and won the first four frames. This boosted them to 16-15 in front, with only five more frames to play.

After loosing the first two, the Panthers came back and won the remaining three frames of the day, winning the session 7-2 and the game overall 19-17.

Having won the play-off final, the Panthers will go to the national finals, which are held at Great Yarmouth in April 2012. It is the second year running the team will go to represent Cornwall at this comeptition.

The Panthers team thanked those that travelled to Bodmin to support them, and the Penryn and Falmouth Pool League sponsors, UKIS and Falmouth’s Twenty Two store for their support through out the year.
