Redruth’s Mark Lewarne will this year captain Team GB for the European Triathlon Championships which take place in Israel during April.

Following his qualification the former Surf Lifesaving European champion, who won gold in Italy as a junior in 2003, will hope to lead by example as team captain for the triathlon event by securing a top draw performance of his own in Israel.

Lewarne, said: “It would be ironic to once again become European Champion in a different sport; I will have to knuckle down to training in the coming month. Sport is full of surprises and who know, this could be my year.”

'”I was surprised to be chosen but I’m really proud and honoured take on the role of team captain in Israel, especially as this year is an Olympic year,”

“'I feel I can use my experience of international competition and provide support to the younger athletes especially who those who have had little or no international experience behind them.

“Three years ago when I went to the World Championships on the Gold Coast, Australia I never thought I would be a team captain just a few years later, it's a real honour, especially when there are world champions in the team and other senior figures who could take the role.”

The European Triathlon Championships run from the April 17 to 21.
