FALMOUTH grounded out a much needed win on Saturday as they fought their way to a 12-3 score away at Bodmin.

It was the Eagle second win in a row, but they made very hard work of situations in which they dominated through their superior forwards and credit goes to the home defence as they stood the pace, except for two occasions.

The first 20 minutes as usual were a cat and mouse affair, yet the Eagles had the territorial advantage, but spurned chances through penalties and wrong decisions.

Only when fly-half Justin Irons discovered winger Nick Carne was on fire, he gave hime the ball and the wing did the rest.

Showing a shimmy and side step, Carne’s speed beat three defenders to open the account.

A silly penalty gave the home side hope, until Carne once again had a hand in a great three-quarter move allowing full-back Josh Symons to outpace the home defence for another five points, making it at 12-3 at half time.

It seemed the Bodmin side decided on a change of tactics, reverting to a more intimidating and physical game resulting in referee, Al Denham, dishing out two yellow cards to the home side Before the game finished, Denham also showed a couple of red cards, one to Bodmin’s Scott Helgeson and another for Falmouth’s Anthony Gilbert.

At the time of handing out the dismissals, the referee had become fed up with the way the match was being played in the second half, although the incident bringing about the reds was nothing more than squabbling like big girls with their handbags.

The remainder of the game was not too exciting to the gourmet supporters as the Eagles proceeded to have white line fever and forgot about their adventurous backs.

In the end, despite not adding to the score in the second half, Falmouth will be happy to get four points and a win away from home.

They return to the Recreation Ground on Saturday as they take on Bude, who were relegated from the Western Counties league last season.

The game kicks-off at 2.30pm.
