PLAYING their match with Torquay Athletic again is the best result for Penryn – according to head coach Russell Lawrance.

On Friday morning it was confirmed by the Tribute Western Counties West board the game between the two sides originally played on October 4 will be played again at the next available date.

This comes after Borough appealed the result, which ended 22-21 to Torquay, because their opponents claimed to have no props available for a large part of the second half, forcing uncontested scrums.

However, one of Athletic’s players on the bench, Jonathan Woodhead, has played in the front row earlier this season.

Reflecting on the decision, Lawrance said he is glad the match will be replayed.

Lawrance said: “In my view what happened was not in the spirit of the game, it was unfair and unjust.

“I am happier to replay the game than get the points turned over as personally I would not want to get points like that, on a technicality, I want the rugby to do the talking.

“What we have now is another game of rugby and it doesn’t have any other significance to me.

“Torquay might feel aggrieved and it’ll give a different edge to the match, but for us it is all about the long term development of the club right the way down from the first team to the colts.”

He went onto say he is not worried about other clubs thinking Borough’s attitude to the situation was a case of sour grapes.

According to the coach, other teams have been supportive towards them since the game was played.

“I have had a couple of guys from other clubs say to me well done,” Lawrance explained.

“But it isn’t for me to get involved in the political side of it all, I just reported what I saw and the league made their decision from there.”

Borough’s skipper George Jones also said he was pleased the team would get another chance to face Torquay.

Jones said: “The right decision has definitely been made.

“I remember at the time it happen in the game there was a bit of confusion about what should happen.

“I did say to the referee that I wasn’t happy about it, but as he pointed out he isn’t a medical expert and can’t force a player to come back on if their physio says they can’t.”

The Packet approached Torquay Athletic for comment, but they did not respond.
