THE CHANGING of the seasons was all too apparent at the Memorial Ground with strong gusts and the occasional threatening shower as Penryn Saracens took on Pirates Amateurs’ second XV, writes Jack Thomas.

Penryn started the first half with all guns blazing testing the Amateurs defence time and again.

Borough were rewarded with a penalty within four minutes, to which Callum Hinchley’s attempt sailed wide of the posts.

They continued to dominate the opening minutes with the majority of the possession and their perseverance paid off with winger Jake Bailey crossing the line in the ninth minute.

The match quickly evened out into a midfield battle with Saracens enjoying the majority of possession during the scrappy back and forth.

Scrum-half Chris Hellier was on hand to relieve some pressure with a few precise box kicks.

Penryn broke the Pirates defence and charged into their half with a speedy run from centre Will Paine.

Saracens then turned the pressure into points with winger Jason Jowett crossing the line and Hinchley converting.

Pirates increased the pressure on Penryn with several nail biting runs through the Borough line.

Centre Ollie Evans was subbed off just before half time with Matt Symons replacing him and the man marking his return to rugby had an immediate impact scoring a blistering try from within the Borough half.

After half time, Borough turned to face the prevailing wind with substitute Dan Booth bursting through the Pirates’ defence, breaking tackle after tackle and crossing the line.

Full-back Mitchell Vague followed shortly after with a darting run and fly-half Hinchley attempted some well placed kicks through the Pirates.

Vague popped up again within the 60th minute and for the final quarter, the match settled into a more heated when Ben Keay was sent to the sin-bin.
