TRURO stay in third place in the Tribute Western Counties West league after easing to victory against local rivals St Ives.

The Chiefs ran in ten tries during their 62-7 win on Saturday with Jake Champion grabbing a hat-trick and Luke Tidball scoring two.

St Ives have struggled so far this season, with just one win to their name, but started brightly as they secured good possession in Truro’s 22 for the opening ten minutes.

Despite the pressure put on them, Truro held out and soon got the scoreboard ticking with Champion getting his first after a superb break by Ross Denning.

Their domination continued in the half when number eight Adam Gayton, who was the man-of-the-match, broke past St Ives’ defence and after slipping past a couple of tackles bundled over the line.

Champion was on hand ten minutes later to dot down after another Gayton break before scrum-half Ricky Brandham grabbed a great opportunist try just before half time, with conversion making it 28-0.

Even though things were looking bleak, St Ives did not give up and managed to grab their only try of the match just before the interval from Tom Chandler.

In the second half, flankers Luke Trescothick and Denning both touched down over the goal line before Tidbull got his first try and Darren Jacques burst through the defence.

Another set up from Gayton created the chance for Champion to complete his hat-trick and in the final few minutes, Tidbull got his second try.

Ben Teasdale finished off the scoring with a try as the final seconds counted down.

Another Cornish derby is in line for Truro next as they visit Wadebridge on Saturday.
