FROM a spectator’s viewpoint this was a disappointing game as it was continually interrupted by the referee’s whistle as both teams made basic errors, writes Paul Stephens.

It was, however, the Hayle forwards who decided the result of this game by grapping two pushover tries.

Proceedings had looked promising early on for the Eagles as they kept possession and going through the phases as they played up the slope.

But after the first scrum it was evident this was going to be a tough afternoon for the visiting forwards.

Hayle had to wait 15 minutes before they entered Falmouth’s 22 and when they did get in, a penalty was won and Dan Magee had no trouble slotting it.

Soon after the Hayle forwards had their counterparts in all sorts of trouble on their own try line and the referee awarded a penalty try as the Eagles scrum was pushed back over its own try line.

Magee converted to make the score 10-0.

On 20 minutes the Eagles captain Justyn Irons knocked over a penalty after his team had managed to put together their best passage of play.

Almost from the restart though, Falmouth conceded another penalty which Magee converted easily.

The rest of the first half was continually punctuated by the ref’s whistle, as both sides struggled to find cohesion.

With half time nearly reached, the Eagles would not have been unhappy to turn round with only a ten point difference.

However, another show of indiscipline led to Olly Church being shown a yellow card and Hayle took advantage of their numerical advantage to score a well worked try.

With defence stretched one way and then the other, Damien Lynes was allowed the space to score in the corner.

Magee failed with the conversion, but at 18-3 Falmouth would need to start the second half better than the first finished.

The next 40 minutes became a mirror image of the first period as both teams struggled to put any phases together, before either being penalised or dropping the ball.

Irons did manage a second penalty to edge the Eagles closer, but in the 60th minute Hayle’s pack had a scrum five metres from the try line and they were not to be denied, as they were awarded their second penalty try.

For the rest of the game Falmouth threw everything at the Hayle try line and did achieve a catch and drive try with Rob Fitzpatrick doting down.

A conversion was achieved by Irons from the touch line, but at 25-13 they needed two more scores and as hard as they tried it was beyond them.
