A HALF century was racked up by Falmouth on Saturday as they travelled down to second bottom Liskeard-Looe in the Cornwall/Devon League.

This was a game the Eagles were expected to win as their opponents are having a bad season, with just one win to their name, coming against the team at the foot of the table South Molton.

Saturday’s match was not the first time this season Liskeard have failed to register anything on the scoreboard and it the majority of the work to seal the win was done in the first half by a dominant Eagles side.

The pack opened the scoring with a catch and drive with Olly Church getting the final touch.

Scrum-half John Tyson then took advantage of a rolling maul to go over for the next five points.

A further four tries were racked up before the interval with them coming from great running rugby as the ball flowed through many pairs of hands.

Getting on the receiving end of these moves were Matt Symons, Nick Carne, Olly Williams and George Hooper with fly-half Justin Irons, who had a good day controlling the backs, converting four times to make the score 38-0 at half time.

Thoughts during the break were of the Eagles running out and at least doubling their score come the 80th minute.

However, Falmouth forgot to read the script and started becoming a little greedy on the ball.

In fairness to the hosts, they tightened their defensive grip and made life difficult for their opposition.

Liskeard showed signs of improvements from their display in the first half and they must be credited as a lot of teams in their position would have simply capitulated and thrown in the towel.

It took 22 minutes for Falmouth to finally open up a stubborn home defence as Tom Spiller darted through to dot down for a try.

Their next attack saw number eight Symon Bailey break several tackles to run half the length of the field.

He then shocked his colleagues with a perfect pass to his team-mate Rob Fitzpatrick, when many expect him to normally keep hugging the egg-shaped thing, before getting it back to dot down and complete the scoring.

Another side sitting in the lower half of the table are next up for the Eagles as Old Plymothian and Mannamedian travel to the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

Fresh off a victory over Exeter Saracens though, Falmouth know OPM will not be a simple push over and will give a good account of themselves on their trip.

But providing the Eagles remember the masterplan, a win should be on the cards.

After the match, which kicks off at 2.30pm, the club will be hosting their Christmas party at the ground with all being welcomed to join the festivities.
