WELLINGTON defied their position in the Western Counties West table and the form book to record a bonus point win at home again Penryn in Somerset.

Borough travelled without a host of first team regulars, but still had chances to win the game having ultimately been undone by a poor first and last quarter, in which the home side scored all of their points.

The visitors made the long trip high in confidence following a 50 point victory at home the previous week.

But after an early penalty goal for fly half Billy Benton, one of three debutants on the day, Penryn were well and truly put on the back foot.

The home side were fighting for their lives at the foot of the table and got their first try of the afternoon with a well-executed cross field kick for winger Alex Johnson to touch down with fly-half Matt Parsons converting.

Soon after, Wellington had doubled their score following a strong drive from their impressive forward pack.

The ball broke to Danny Lee, who scored under the posts from short range with Parsons again converting the try.

When centre Luke Brown added another just a minute later, Penryn were left reeling having not had a say in the game in the opening 20 and trailing 21-3.

As ever, the deficit seemed to galvanise the visitors, who hit back before the break.

When the Penryn forwards had punched holes in the home defence, the visiting back line had enough pace and guile to cause havoc in the Wellington ranks and following some neat handling, full-back Mike Creeden crossed to give Penryn a lifeline.

From the restart, Adam Hughes did fantastically well, picking up a tricky ball to make a break and offloading to Tom Hoban.

He then found prop Matt Williams in support who smartly cut inside the last defender to finish and give the Borough a second try in as many minutes.

Benton could not add the extras this time, but Penryn were back in it.

Borough pressed and pressed as the half drew to an end and came close on a number of occasions, eventually having to settle for a penalty goal from Benton, which cut the gap to only three at the break, something that seemed highly unlikely 20 minutes prior to the whistle.

The second half started much as the first ended, with Penryn on the charge and looking dangerous out wide.

Oscar Fields and Jake Bailey made their first team debuts, coming onto the pitch after Benton had levelled the scores at 21-21 with a third penalty.

As the bright sun settled behind the home clubhouse as the game entered the final quarter, the temperature dropped and so too did Penryn’s chances of a victory. Another powerful drive from the home pack secured a bonus point for Wellington in the shape of home captain Micky Norman.

If the missed conversion appeared crucial, it would not be, as Wellington added a fifth try moments later in a near carbon copy of the first 20 minutes.

Brown added a second and despite another missed conversion this was a sucker punch for Penryn, which spelled the end of their chances on the day.

Borough kept going to the very end in search of a try which could have yielded two bonus points to take back down the motorway.

Instead it was Wellington who had the final say, when Tim Jenkinson dotted down for Parsons to convert in the final act.

A tough day for the young Penryn side, who travel to St Ives next week.
