PENRYN crashed to a heavy defeat at the hands of top of the table Teignmouth, in what was a difficult day in Devon.

When the sides met earlier in the season, Borough defeated Teignmouth at home in dramatic fashion and went into Saturday’s clash hoping for much of the same in the first game of 2015.

However it was the home team who had it all their own way on a tough afternoon for the visitors.

Borough started well, taking a deserved 3-0 lead in the shape of a James Salisbury penalty following good early pressure from the forwards.

The hosts fought back though and took the lead with an impressive score following a break through the middle.

A narrowly missed conversion attempt left the game finely poised at this stage and Penryn made good inroads into the Teigns territory from the restart and had another shot at goal to regain the lead.

Sensing an opening, Borough went for the kill with a quick penalty, but unfortunately the home team turned the ball over and went the length of the field to go into a 12-3 lead.

There was no looking back from the Teigns from this point as they notched a bonus point try to make it 26-3 before the 20th minute was reached.

Everything which could go wrong, did so in the first period for the visitors as they gave away further scores along with losing key personnel in the form of Grant Randlesome who took a heavy blow to the head and Matt Williams, who hobbled off with a knee complaint.

Things looked particularly bleak at the break as Borough trailed 43-3.

The second half display though was one of defiance and resilience form Penryn, who showed great character despite the game being dead and buried by the interval.

Teignmouth racked up their 50th point early in the second period, but replacement Mike Creeden jinked his way through the defence for a consolation try, with Salisbury converting.

Penryn continued to play from all over the pitch, but sloppy errors gifted a further two scores to the Teigns, who ran out comfortable 62-10 winners on the day.

Borough will look to bounce back at home to Torquay this week at the Memorial Ground.
