IT would be fair to say Penryn were probably not expecting much from their clash away at Kingsbridge on Saturday.

Sitting third in the Tribute Western Counties West table, the Kings have only lost one match at home all season whereas Borough have claimed just a single victory on their travels.

However, by the time proceedings were over at High House, Russell Lawrance’s men will feel like their second win was well within their grasp.

They could not take a firmer grip though as most of the day’s luck fell out of their favour.

When these sides met at the Memorial Ground in November, Borough had an off day and collapsed to a 29-3 loss.

This time they were determined not to falter in such a bad manner and after six minutes took the lead as recent signing Martin Strick kicked a penalty successfully between the posts.

Kings soon showed though why they are high up in the table with their response as Ali Williams set up a try for Jack Cope, which Ashley Treeby converted.

Another Strick penalty brought Penryn back to within a point of their opponents, but on the half hour mark Ben Newman charged down a clearance kick from the visitors and Williams was on hand to dot down.

Treeby added the extra points and with the half time score reading 14-6 and momentum going their way, some might have expected the hosts to control the second period.

Penryn had other ideas though and came back out from the dressing room believing they could secure away win number two of the season.

Their belief would soon be boosted by a try as winger Jack Willey plucked a stray Kings pass out of the air and dart over the line.

The fortune soon turned around though as Strick’s conversion attempt struck the woodwork, meaning the gap stayed at three points.

Borough’s fly-half would get another opportunity to close Kings’ advantage completely with ten minutes to go, but he could not steer a penalty on target.

A losing bonus point was some consolation for Borough who now turn their attentions to Saturday’s Cornwall Cup semi final against South West One’s St Austell.

The clash at the Memorial Ground kicks-off at 2.30pm.
