CAMBORNE needed extra time before seeing off stout St Austell resistance to claim the Tribute Cornwall Cup for a third season in a row at St Clements Hill, writes Martin Symons.

The champions were particularly well served throughout by their props young Andrius Zachorovas and veteran Nigel Endean whilst David Mankee ended with a man of the match contribution of 18 points.

The Cherry and Whites fell behind early on to an angled Dan Pearce penalty but soon levelled matters on 11 minutes when fly half Mankee landed a simple penalty.

In a tense opening quarter, Camborne then lost a ball near their own line and impressive flanker Ian Venner pounced for the game's opening try.

Full-back Pearce booted a good conversion, but soon after saw a long range penalty shot come back off a post.

Another regulation Mankee penalty cut the deficit to 10-6 before as the interval neared. hardworking number eight David Roberts released left wing Alex Ducker cutting in off his flank to scythe through the Saints cover before crossing under the uprights.

Mankee's conversion put his team three points in front at the break.

St Austell dominated the second period territorially but could not find a way through the Camborne cover with Mankee and Richard Kevern making a number of telling tackles.

Late on the Saints pack hammered repeatedly on the Cherry and Whites line first being ruled held up before another surge ended with flanker James Goldsworthy saving the day for Town.

St Austell were eventually forced to settle for a close range Pearce penalty to send the final into overtime at 13-13.

Camborne quickly established control in the first period of extra time pinning the Saints back and when centre Kevern charged down a clearing kick Mankee was on hand to gather the ball and gleefully dive over for a try which he also converted.

In the final period a relieved Camborne put further distance between the two sides with a 30m Mankee penalty before in the dying moments lock Rob Jeffs saw red to compound the Saints' misery.

On the final whistle, as 12 months previously, it was Cherry and Whites' skipper Steve Kenward who stepped up to receive the trophy.
