CORNWALL skipper Kyle Marriott admitted his experience of beating Lancashire at Twickenham might be a good omen on Sunday – but said all the focus is on the match itself.

In 2007, the number eight was part of Devon’s side who defeated the Red Rose county 27-6 in the County Championship Final.

Speaking to the media at the Duchy’s last training session before they travel up to London, Marriott said the experience was good but knows it will take a lot more to defeat the defending champions.

Marriott said: “It might well be a lucky omen, but I’m trying not to look back on the past too much.

“I was actually saying to a friend the other day that although I’ve been part of a side who’ve beaten Lancashire before, I have also captained sides at Twickenham twice before and lost both times.

“It is just an exciting occasions for everyone to be involved in and after we finish training, all our focus will be turned towards kick-off on Sunday and how we are going to play.

“That is the process rugby I like to play and we’re just going to take it minute-by-minute, step-by-step and not get too far ahead of ourselves.”

The 28-year-old admitted the build-up to the final has been exciting, even if it has dragged on a bit.

When comparing it to his previous experiences with Devon, who he captained at the same stage in 2008, Marriott said the feeling this time is more special.

“There does seem to be an extra amount of passion this time round,” he said.

“There are loads of messages flying around on social media supporting us and there is a really good buzz going around.

“It all adds to it and I think it will be a really momentous occasion on Sunday.”
