Camborne 17 Hornets 34

Camborne finally tasted home defeat after a remarkable run of twenty one South West One matches going down against an excellent Hornets side who on this form should be candidates for promotion.

Though David Roberts was fit to return to the back row for ‘Town’ on the day the presence of flu victim player/coach John Griffiths in the 2nd row was sorely missed with flanker Martin Woolcock steping up to fill the engine room vacancy.

Given first use of the slope the visitors’ huge pack signalled their intent early on driving over for an eighth minute converted score. Camborne soon opened their account with a monster David Mankee penalty but were then forced to defend desperately for a lengthy period.

From a rare home attack Hornets turned over ball with a big hit midfield and dangerous winger Jermaine Jones romped over for a soft long range try to make the score 3-12.

As the interval neared full back Mankee fired over another well judged penalty to cut the deficit. Crucially from the 2nd half resumption the lighter Cherry & Whites forwards twice came up inches short when going desperately close to scoring having been camped in front of the West Bank.

Instead on 56 minutes following a five mere scrum the burly Jones cut through the home defensive line to touchdown his 2nd try which he also easily converted for 6-19.

Though Mankee chipped away at the lead with a further two penalties inside the last quarter more forward pressure soon brought the bonus point try for the visitors which Jones converted for a 14 point advantage.

The Cherry & Whites hit back with a spirited attack that saw wing Alex Ducker split the cover to send replacement full back Joe Parma clear for a cracking try in the scoreboard corner.

Any hopes of a home comeback however were dashed by a 76th minute Jones penalty that put Hornets out of sight at 17-29 and on the final whistle right wing Tom Bradley added further gloss to the victory racing over for a fine try.

Camborne travel to mid table Thornbury this weekend.
