PENRYN suffered a second successive disappointing loss to teams haunted by relegation, this time by St Ives in a high scoring affair.

Borough took away a bonus point for four tries, but were left frustrated from what might have been.

Just as Penryn would have been expected to beat Wellington last week, they were favourites again against the struggling Hakes.

But they were undone in disappointing fashion.

The visitors again gave themselves a mountain to climb, having to recover from a 14-0 deficit.

The battling Hakes showed great desire in the opening minutes of the game initially taking the lead with a penalty goal from Jamie Prisk.

More pressure followed and this time the hosts crashed over and although Prisk could not add the extras, he did add two further penalties.

Penryn needed to respond to give themselves a glimmer of hope and they did exactly that before the interval.

Good phases allowed James Salisbury to reduce arrears with a penalty goal, before Penryn struck again.

With the hosts hanging on for the break, excellent incisive play from the visitors led to the first Borough try, with Tom Hoban galloping in.

Salisbury converted, but Penryn allowed another Prisk penalty goal before the break to leave the Penryn trailing 17-10.

Penryn had cause for optimism at the beginning of huge second half, after a strong end to the opening period but suffered a disastrous start.

A loose miss pass was intercepted by the home side who went over for a converted try to give Penryn a 14 point deficit to chase down for the second time in the game.

They did respond again, following an electric break from Mitchell Vague who set up Ben Jordan for Sailsbury to again convert.

However, skipper George Jones saw yellow for use of the boot as he took out his frustrations.

St Ives secured a try bonus point with the man advantage to peg Penryn back again, before Ben Ashwin set up a tense ending with a strong finish.

The topsy turvy contest seemed to finally be settled, by a fifth Hakes score as the home crowd rejoiced only a third win of the season.

Penryn launched a final attack, which Josh Chambers finished well to take home the try bonus point at least.

It would have been two bonus points, but the conversion narrowly missed.

There were final frantic attempts for a comeback, but they were ultimately in vain as the final whistle sounded on a disappointing afternoon for Penryn.

All Borough eyes turn to Boxing Day and a trip to the Recreation Ground for a feisty clash with Falmouth.
