A BEAUTIFUL day for rugby was matched by the scoreline for Falmouth as they ran out 37-13 victors over Old Plymothian and Mannamedian, writes Hugh Murton.

Straight from the kick-off, the OPM’s stand-off half fluffed his start and gave the home team a scrum, allowing the Eagles to attack immediately.

Centre Matt Symons cut through the middle, broke the line and offloaded to Tom Spiller who scored and Justyn Irons converting putting Falmouth seven points to the good just 60 seconds in.

The visitors give a spirited response and forced Falmouth to give a penalty away, which full-back Tom Finnie knocked over.

Hostilities were resumed though by the home side and started throwing the ball around in style.

The home side resume the hostilities and start throwing the ball around in style.

Spiller broke through and with a neat inside pass he put scrum-half John Tyson over.

Tyson was having a field day running at the visitors and forcing errors, bringing an inevitable penalty which Irons duly put between the posts.

With Falmouth showing plenty of confidence and having success, all seemed to be going swimmingly.

But as often happens, the best laid plans come to grief over a mistake.

A ball kicked out of defence when the simple thing would have been to clear any danger to touch and start again.

However, the ball falls into the hands of visiting full-back Finnie and he took full advantage, sidestepping his way to the line to score in the corner.

He converted his own try from the touch line to make the score 17-10.

From being in total control, the home team were now only one score in front.

Returning to the attack, ferocious efforts were made to quell any good feeling for the visitors and man-of-the-match Tyson made a breakthrough and passed to wing George Cooper, who sprinted to the corner for a classy try.

The conversion attempt was missed, but the feel good factor had re-hatched.

Pressure was now mounting on the visiting forwards as the home eight began to dominate the scrums.

Another penalty arrived giving Irons a kick to get three more points.

A crossing offence by the home backs gave the ever reliable Finnie the chance to slot a penalty just before the half time whistle was blown with the score at 25-13.

Falmouth were in the driving seat and the majority of the second period, the visitors were been outplayed.

However, OPM’s most dangerous player Finnie kept them in the game.

Falmouth started the second half as they mean to continue by dominating the forward exchanges, keeping the visitors on the rack, gaining ground and keeping possession.

Symons shrugged off a few tackles to suck in the defence before spinning the ball out to his central partner Alec Stuthridge to score.

Continuous forward dominance brought more chances and from a line-out a drive gave Ashley Searle, known as Caveman to his pals, the opportunity to power over into the corner.

Irons missed the conversion attempt and no more was added to the scoreboard after this.

Next up for the Eagles is an away day in Penzance against Pirates Amateurs.
