FALMOUTH played their best game of season but end up losing in a very tightly fought game.

The hosts kicked off and immediately put their opponents under pressure, with a knock-on giving Falmouth an early scrum to set out their game plan.

From a solid set piece, the ball was moved to William Becconsall, who switched it to Jack King to power close the try-line.

A quick recycle got the ball to Mathew McDonnell who also went close at the corner, only for great defending to stop him.

Both sides hammering at their counterpart’s try-lines throughout the first half as the defences were given a stern test.

It was Falmouth who broke the deadlock when from a line-out, King made a run which drew in Penzance’s players before offloading to Thomas Trebilcock to power over.

However, the visitors struck back quickly as they forced a turnover from the restart which set up Frankie Knowle to show electric feet and sprint in for a try.

The score at half time was 7-7 and after the interval, the players kept up the intensity which had made the game so interesting.

It took another good run by Knowle to get the only score of the half and give Penzance the victory, but Falmouth threw everything at the Pirates in closing stages.

Great resilience was displayed by the Pirates’ defence to hold on for the win.
