SCORES did not matter when Penryn and St Ives’ Under 11s met on Sunday as the spirit of rugby prevailed and triumphed.

The Hakes have been struggling for numbers this season in the age category and turned up with just seven players, while their host’s usually large squad had been reduced due to illness to 12.

With this in mind, it was decided to play a match with two sides of nine each with two players from the home team joining St Ives.

Another recruit ended up being borrowed by the Hakes after an injury forced one of the players off early into the tie.

Members of Penryn’s side all took it in turns to put on an away jersey during the game, but the commitment from both sets of youngsters was not diminished.

Tommy Tetley showed his try scoring ability in both shirts, scoring a hat-trick for either side, with the young man scoring five in total for the visitors.

Hat-tricks were also scored by Ethan Weaver and Flinn Congdon while Aron Williams bagged a brace.
