GEORGE Jones has promised to keep up the physicality for Penryn for the rest of the season – even if it means picking up an injury which rules him out of Cornwall’s squad.

Borough’s captain has been called into the county’s senior training squad as they begin the build-up to the 2015 Bill Beaumont Cup campaign.

On Monday evening, the team had their first meeting at Kingsley Village before training starts for the side.

Flanker Jones has impressed with the Tribute Western Counties West club this season which has seen him take over captain duties at the Memorial Ground.

Speaking to the Packet, Jones said his main focus is still with Penryn, adding he will not be wrapping himself up in cotton wool before the County Championship starts in May.

The 26-year-old, said: “It is a physical game particularly when you are playing in the back row like I do.

Jones makes a tackle against Tiverton.

“But there certainly will not be any holding back from me for the rest of the season at Penryn and I’m sure that is exactly the same attitude as every other back row player here.”

It is the first time Jones has been involved with any of the county sides, having not represented any of the youth teams growing up.

He admitted getting the call to the senior side was a “pleasant surprise”.

“It was nice to get asked to come along to training,” Jones said.

“Obviously it is the first time I have been involved with any of the Cornish county sides and it is quite good to be around the squad.

“Other than the team meeting, nothing has really happened yet but it is still an exciting time.

“It has always been an aspiration of mine to play for Cornwall, as it is for a lot of young players growing up in the county.

“Personally I think I have had an OK season, but for someone outside of Penryn to recognise me in this context is nice and even though the championship is still a long way away, it is just great to get experience in this set up.”
