FOR the 30th year in a row teams trundled down to Penryn’s Memorial Ground for the annual Easter 7s competition.

Sunny weather greeted players from the 11 teams who took part in the event which saw more than six hours worth of rugby played across two pitches at the Western Counties West club’s base.

Among those taking part were sides made up of Borough squad members including Dad’s Army and Al-Tryeda while players from Taunton and Wales also came down to be part of the action.

The champions from the two previous editions of the tournament, Saltash-based Buzancias, also returned to defend the title.

Once again they reached the grand final, but this time they came unstuck against a strong Eggs 7s side who were making their return to the competition since winning it in 2012.

The side, captained by Camborne’s Taron Peacock, got their summer season off to a fantastic start by dominating the day before pasting Buzancias 43-0 in the final.

Afterwards, Eggs team manager Richard Jackson said: "Proud to see an Eggs side playing at Penryn again after a three year gap, and to win the competition was an added bonus.

"Special mention to our two props Kevin Denis and Axel Belert (pictured below) who flew in from Biarritz in the early hours of sunday morning in order to cameo for the Eggs."

Alongside the main prize, a plate competition was also held which was collected by Fit Pit who defeated Titans in the final 29-0.

Away from the action on the pitches, crowds gathered around the ground to watch the festivities take place with much enjoyment and banter between all the teams participating.

Head organiser Dermot Shier said: “The gods looked very kindly on us and this year was one of the better tournaments.

“There was a lot of rugby going on and this seemed to keep everybody focused and all kept their eye on the prize, meaning the overall standard of rugby was good.

“All players and spectators entered into the spirit of the day, with fun being the aim, and I must also thank the four referees who helped us out.”
