PLENTY of determination was shown by Penryn’s Under 13s in their final game of the season as they came from behind to beat St Austell 19-17.

On a hot day, the pitch was hard and pointed towards a tough match with both teams, who had drawn their previous two encounters together, having players on county duty.

The Saints had the better of the early exchanges and made plenty of ground with their backs running the show and eventually scoring the first try of the match.

A scrappy period of rugby followed with many knock-ons bringing a lot of scrums with tempers beginning to fray in the rising temperature of the day.

Discipline was kept by Penryn with Sam Hammersley putting in some delightful kicks for his colleagues to chase down and continual pressure from them led to Dan Price bursting in under the posts.

Just before half time, the Saints retook the lead with another try to make the half time score 10-7 in favour of the visitors.

They began the second half in similar fashion, pegging Penryn back in their own half for long periods, but some great tackling coupled with handling errors prevented the away team from taking advantage.

Tempers were still cooking under the sun’s heat and a Saints prop was lucky only to see yellow for a terrible high tackle.

This appeared to dent Penryn’s concentration and allowed the visitors to score under the posts.

But from this point, the hosts fired themselves up and put in a fantastic finish to the clash with their tackling, rucking and running with the ball all going up a notch.

From a driving maul set up after another brilliant kick by Hammersley, Alfie Bray ploughed his way through to dot down for the first time in Borough colours and skipper for the day Jonah Frost bagged a try after a drop out was charged down.

In the final play of the game, the Saints got the ball and made ground to the home try line, but a knock-on killed the move off and saw Penryn claim a 19-17 victory in what was a fine performance by the whole team.
