With the Pirates Amateurs pulling out of the Cornwall Cup there was a free weekend for Penryn, who picked a select XV against Camborne School of Mines, writes Ross Hancock.

For many, it would be the first taste of action this season as fixtures for the Saracens have been hard to come by. But a youthful and exciting team sprinkled with first team experience took to the field at the Memorial Ground against their student tenants.

For the miners, it was a first taste of action for the season too and as a result the game was split into four twenty minute quarters. Despite the glorious weather perfect for running rugby, it made for a slightly stop start afternoon. The students had come out on top during the two sides previous meeting in the Blue Flame Cup earlier in the year, so the Borough were determined to set the record straight. The miners started in a strong and committed manner though, bringing plenty of physicality to the game in what is always a spicy affair between the two.

There wasn’t much to write home about from the first quarter, other than missed chances from both sides who created plenty but finished little. The second quarter started much better for Penryn, despite their university counterparts making a host of changes with their large squad. Winger George Mitchell was on the end of a flowing move and finished well in the corner, with Rob Banks converting. Mitchell added a second soon after as the Borough began to pull away.

There were a further raft of changes from the Miners at half time, but it did little to stop the ever increasing Penryn onslaught, as they added a further four tries to take the game comfortably away from the students. George Mitchell completed an impressive hat trick to start the quarter to realistically quash any hopes of CSM comeback. Next came a charge down effort from Josh Dale, before Adam Hughes and Tom Mitchell finished well, to round off what was a useful exercise for both teams.
