Penryn 116, Wessex 0

Penryn were in a ruthless mood against Wessex, demolishing the Devon side and running in a staggering 18 tries in the process.

The Borough played out a shock draw against the visitors earlier on this season in Exeter, but a similar result was never on the cards this time.

Penryn saw both promotion rivals win last weekend, as teams catch up with their games and saw Saltash in particular score over 80 points twice in two days.

The game started frantically, with the ball in play from kick off until the first try. Penryn started with tempo and Tomas Townsend was the first of many to get over the line.

Penryn have made a habit this season of securing a try bonus point early on in the game, especially at home and it was no surprise to see the same on this occasion. Chris Hellier added a second before a quick fire brace from captain Grant Randlesome. Mitchell Vague converted all three, finishing with 12 from 18 off the tee and an individual tally of 29 points.

Things didn’t get much better from the visitors as they lost a man to the bin, following an illegal aerial challenge on James Salisbury.

Hellier and Townsend both added their second tries of the half, before Sam Hitchens got in on the action to give Penryn a 43-0 half time lead.

It was clear that it would be another long 40 minutes for the visitors early in the second period, as a converted James Salisbury brought up the half century for Penryn and there was more to follow.

Nathan Strick, Paul Saberton and AJ Stanfield all got over for their first tries off the afternoon as the Borough targeted a century and record score in the league. Randlesome, Townsend and Hitchens all completed their hat tricks and some more excellent kicking saw the home side a score away from triple figures.

Saberton added his second and Penryn’s 16th try to get them to the century, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Penryn didn’t settle there either and continued the ruthless exhibition of attacking rugby to add a further two scores, in the shape of Mitchell Vague and Adam Hughes.

Two more Vague conversions finally ended the Wessex agony and Penryn’s domination for the biggest score of the season in the Cornwall/Devon league. Penryn host Plymouth Argaum this weekend, in the pursuit of another victory.
