Seven Sunbeams gathered on a bright and breezy St Swithin’s Day, Sunday, July 15, to sail a commemorative race for Terence Charles Holm, known to all as "Bomber”.

Bomber was Commodore of St Mawes Sailing Club from 2003 to 2011, as well as Commodore of the Sunbeam Association.

Terence was not an ex-flier, but earned his nickname at a young age by bombing off the Portscatho Pier.

He sailed many types of boats, but loved his Sunbeams most of all, and both his former boats took part, V8 Clary, which he sailed for 34 years, was helmed by Peter Collett, Commodore of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, and V34 Vanity by David Carne.

There are 26 Sunbeams in Falmouth, designed by Alfred Westmacott in 1923, a 26 foot wooden one design yacht, providing very competitive racing in a lovely boat.

A very close start saw David Richards in the newest Sunbeam of all, V48 Racy Lady, built at Mylor in 2008, take an early lead, but V8 Clary got to the first mark ahead, where the fleet split, some crossing to Black Rock, whilst V21 Maranui and V7 Pixy sailed up the channel tacking at the Narrows, which proved to be the better choice as they crossed the rest of the fleet, to round the Vilt buoy ahead.

Maranui, helmed by Timmy "the fish" Bailey led at the St Mawes turning mark, and for most of the second round, but V7 Pixy just managed to squeeze past, in a close duel, to cross the finish line first.

There was a well attended and excellent lunch at St Mawes Sailing Club, where Ruth Kelly, Bomber's partner for many years, presented a  new Memorial Trophy Race silver salver, and accepted the Friendship Bowl, which, appropriately, shows three Sunbeams between St Anthony and Black Rock, awarded to Bomber by the fleet for his many years of support to Sunbeams.

Results: 1st, V7 Pixy (Lyulph Hesling); 2nd, V21 Maranui (Tim Bailey); 3rd, V5 Whimsey (David Mantle).
