This weekend the 2008 Billabong British Championships saw two new champions, some great weather and perfect conditions. Seventeen year old Stuart Campbell from Woolacombe and 17 year old Holly Donnelly from Newquay showed stunning form in 3 to 4ft conditions to take the top spots on the podium at one of the year’s most prestigious contests. Organised by the British Surfing Association (BSA), the event saw one of the largest ever entries with over 180 contestants traveling from all over the country to bid for this major title at Fistral Beach, Newquay. With the swell forecast to decrease over the weekend, Saturday offered up some excellent surf for competitors to test their skills and demonstrate to the judges what they can do in the clean conditions. The variety of moves and action on display was described by head judge Mike Durkin as, “Definitely impressive – the best seen in many years. This shows a promising time for British surfing.”

Year-on-year women are the fastest growing sector in the surf industry and with thousands of new girls taking to the waves, a brand new club, Cornwall Surfer Girls is on a mission to grow and develop its vision and membership. Monday, June 16 saw the first Cornwall Surfer Girls General Meeting at the British Surfing Association office at 7pm to elect the Club's committee and make decision on the Club's constitution and exciting future direction.

Calypso British Junior Surfing Team Returns

Twelve youngsters from across Cornwall, Devon and Wales have returned from France as the 13th in the world at the 2008 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. The event saw junior athletes under the age of 18 coming from every continent on the planet and the British team competed against over 30 countries including Australia, USA, South Africa, and Hawaii along side emerging nations including Israel, Morocco, Costa Rica.

They came, they saw, they conquered. University College Falmouth romped home at the BUSA British National Student Surfing Championships at the weekend. It was only their second year of participating but they won the team title for 2008 by a huge margin as three of the four men's finalists were from the faculty. Billy Norways won the men's individual trophy, the surfer is from St Ives but he is attending the college at Falmouth along with Fabian Baker and Josh Letherbarrow who were the other two Falmouth students who reached the final. Plymouth's Paul Barlow came fourth in the final.

The British Surfing Association (BSA) has found its new Regional Surf Development Coach for the South West following the announcement of the crucial funding which created the new career opportunity in September. The position funded by Sport England in collaboration with the BSA has been developed to strengthen the quality of surf coaching available across the region and build the surf club structure which is integral to the growth of surfing as a regular sporting activity amongst people of all ages.

Perfect 4-6 foot surf rolled onto Cornwall's Fistral Beach this weekend for the British Interclub Surfing Championships 2007. Teams from all over the country made their way to Newquay to compete in the biggest club event in the British surfing calendar. Eight teams took to the water in the heats.

Britain's kneeboarding team made a name for itself at the Kneeboard World Championships in Santa Cruz, California earlier this year. Newquay's Jody Winter claimed the Ladies World Champion title, Natalie Silverthorne from Polzeath consolidated British success by taking second place and the International Surfing Association crowned Richard Smith, also from Polzeath, as the Pro Junior World Champion. Now the medal winners will all be competing on a local break as Fistral Beach, Newquay, will host the Thule British Kneeboard Championships on the 3rd and 4th Novemeber.

The O'Neill British Open Championships is taking place this weekend of 13th and 14th October on Fistral Beach, Newquay and the surf is building to be the best of the year. With the amalgamation of two lows the waves are set to be a clean 4 to 6 foot and will allow the top British surfers to compete at the best of their ability.

Day three was an epic climax to the Headworx English Nationals. With the swell increasing overnight, the men's open kicked off in six to eight foot conditions, with the other divisions moved to nearby Tolcarne. The surf was challenging, forcing the UK's best riders to dig deep in their quest for the Headworx English crown. Several of the top contenders were eliminated early on with Alan Stokes, Matt Capel and Johnny Fryer all coming unstuck in the choppy conditions. Sam Lamiroy the British Champion even snapped his board on his second wave, leaving him unable to continue his challenge for a double national title.
