The first ever FXU inter-university surf competition has ended with Exeter Cornwall Campus victorious.
The Tremough-based surf team took the water last weekend at Godrevy, producing some excellent displays of surfing that put them ahead of rivals Falmouth, Plymouth and Exeter.
The University College Falmouth surf team came in second place, securing a brilliant one-two for the Cornwall universities.
The first day saw some small but clean waves that proved tricky for some of the surfers. However, eventual winner of the individual competition Josh Letherbarrow showed that small waves were no problem for him with an impressive display of technical surfing.
The second day started of with near perfect shoulder high waves, but increasing winds and a rising tide meant that the final was held in far from perfect conditions. Nevertheless, an exciting and close final ensued, with Letherbarrow eventually securing victory by a narrow margin.
Over 40 surfers, both male and female, turned up for the two day event. The competition format was different than normal in that competitors also had to judge some of the heats that they weren't competing in. This format, developed by Freeriders Surf Shop, ensured a fairer result because of the sheer amount of judges that were used.
Freeriders provided a great deal of help to the student's union both in the run up to and during the event. They provided much of the equipment, people and prizes that made the competition possible. A charity raffle was held after the prize giving ceremony with the proceeds going to Breast Cancer Research.
With the weekend being a great success, the student union and Freeriders Surf Shop are keen to get organising next year's competition, scheduled for the coming June. Exeter Cornwall Campus will be hoping to hold on to their trophy.
