Whisper it quietly, as nobody likes talk of silverware in September, but the local football teams have made starts that suggest trophies could be on the way to the region in May.

Apart from the Jolly’s Supplementary Cup won by Falmouth Town Reserves, it was a baron season for the local senior football teams last campaign.

Penryn Athletic came the closest to glory, reaching the semi-final of the Cornwall Senior Cup, and Falmouth Town made a late, but ultimately fruitless title charge.

This season could be different. Penryn Athletic who began the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons in awful form, have begun this season unbeaten, with five wins out of seven.

The squad has stayed much the same as last year’s, with the exception of top goalscorer Pat Shaughnessy, who left to join Falmouth Town and then St Austell.

Many feared that they would miss the 26-goal a season man, but so far Penryn have scored 29 goals - 12 clear of their nearest rivals Newquay.

Steve Brewer, who has netted five times in seven games, has been a good addition to the squad and last season's Reserves players Cody Cooke and Dan Richardson have slotted easily into the first team line-up adding goals and assists to Penryn’s cause.

Their challengers for the CSWPL division one (west) title might come from North Cornwall, with both Camelford and Newquay starting strong.

However, Porthleven have surprised a few people with their start and aim to be up their challenging.

They have played fewer games than everyone else, but currently sit in seventh - as one of only three teams on an unbeaten record. Again continuity from last season has been the key to their successful start. The previous summer they lost most of their team as their then manager Gary Marks resigned from the club. This time though boss Kevin Richards has had a settled summer and managed to keep the squad together.

Another surprise package this year has been Helston Athletic in the Jolly's Combination League. Their summer was anything but settled as Tony Roberts resigned and striker Reg Pearson left, along with many other first team players, to St Day.

However, those in charge at the club acted quickly to bring in Sid Taylor as first team manager and Mark Goldsworthy, who had left the previous summer to join Penryn, returned to the first team squad to replace Pearson’s goals.

Helston also have top goalscorer Neil Southall to return to the first team in November. Helston currently sit joint top of the table and face an interesting encounter when they travel to St Day this weekend to line-up against many of their former players.

That should be the acid-test to see if they have what it takes to stay at the top. However, their squad is small and they are likely to find it difficult in the winter months when suspensions and injuries kick in.

Penryn Reserves, who went the whole of last Jolly's Combination season unbeaten, will be up their challenging. They lost on the opening day to Perranwell but have since recovered to win five straight games. Both Penryn and Helston stand a good chance at winning the Jolly's Combination League, but the favourites are still Illogan, who having won the treble last year and got to the semi-finals of the Cornwall Senior Cup, will prove very difficult to stop.

Falmouth Town were tipped as one of the title favourites at the CSWPL premier division, but their campaign has been inconsistent so far.

However, an impressive 4-0 win over St Blazey on Tuesday suggests they have what it takes and if they were to win their two games in hand they would be level on points with second-placed Plymouth Parkway.

Falmouth Town do not play this Saturday, but the real test of their credentials will come the week after when they face champions Buckland Athletic at Homer’s Heath.

Falmouth certainly have the players to win the League and have improved since last year, but Buckland have done the same. They have won their opening seven games and, like Illogan, their title will be difficult to take.
