There is no doubt Tuesday night's 5-1 home defeat to Bodmin would have come as a massive blow to Falmouth Town in their bid for glory in the CSWPL premier division.

To be beaten by your title rivals home is bad enough, but the margin of victory suggests that, even though they are only nine points behind, it is going to be very difficult for Falmouth to overhaul Bodmin at the top.

Fans following the Packet's live updates service seemed to agree as one wrote: "Looking like Town have dropped too many points already," as the third goal went in. Another Plymouth Parkway supporter added that the title would be going to Bodmin, Buckland or themselves and to "forget the rest".

Granted it was a bad defeat, but I won't be writing Falmouth off just yet.

I thought 5-1 flattered Bodmin on Tuesday night. Two of the goals they scored came in the final minutes when ten-man Falmouth were pushing forward for a way back into the match. Added to that their second goal, a penalty from Adam Carter, was slightly fortunate. I'm not going to argue that Falmouth deserved anything from the game, as they didn't. They struggled to create clear-cut openings and let Bodmin control the midfield, but they were not four goals worse than the current league leaders.

Added to that Falmouth had gone into the match on the back of an 11-game winning run - with 26 games left to go this season it is premature at best to rule out a side capable of doing that.

And if Buckland are going to be enlisted as title contenders, then Falmouth have to be included as well.

That isn't a slight at Buckland either. They are champions and have only lost one game in 12, so quite rightly should be considered among the front runners.

However, they lost 7-0 to Bodmin just over a week ago and were beaten 5-2 by Falmouth in an FA Vase match in October and nobody is ruling them out yet.

I think most CSWPL fans are in agreement that Bodmin look like they will win the title, but if that does happen, it is still not the end of the world for Town.

Falmouth finished fifth last campaign and set their sets on gaining promotion this season, which a second place finish behind Bodmin would achieve.

Town are also still in the FA Vase, Cornwall Senior Cup and Throgmorton Cup.

So despite a disappointing loss on Tuesday night, there is still plenty for Falmouth to play for.
