There is nothing quite like a final day of the season where the outcome of the championship title has yet to be decided.

But looking around the local leagues there appears to be little chance of that come May. Most of the destinations for the league trophies seem to be already set in stone.

Bodmin are clear favourites for the CSWPL premier division, sitting 13 points clear of second place Buckland. Their lead at the top is so great that they could seal the title with an away victory at Penzance on April 21 - providing of course that they win their three games before that.

It has been even more of a one horse race in the Carlsberg SW Peninsula League division one west, where Newquay won the title on Good Friday.

The Peppermints have raced to the championship crown, and subsequent promotion, by dropping only nine points all season.

Goonhavern also secured the Trelawny League premier division title over the weekend and even on a national level it looks like Manchester United will have the title won before the blockbuster clash with Manchester City, on April 30.

However, there is one league that is bucking the trend. Just when one side gets ahead slightly, all of a sudden a shock result draws them back into the chasing-pack.

I am talking about the Jolly’s Combination League. It was only in early March that Falmouth Town looked odds on favourites for the title having surged ahead of Penryn, with a couple of games in hand as well.

However, in that past week Falmouth suffered a shock defeat to St Just and, having sorted out their form, Penryn moved back on top with a 1-0 win over Pendeen.

Illogan RBL and St Agnes are also in with a shout. It has to be said that the Combination League has provided a close title race this season and looking at the top two sides run-ins there could be a few more twists and turns yet.

Falmouth Town still have to face title-chasing Illogan and Penryn mixed in with tricky looking away ties at Pendeen Rovers and local rivals Falmouth Athletic DC. Added to that they are games at home to high-flying St Ives and Pendeen at Bickland Park.

Penryn on the other hand have an easier route to navigate, although they do have two less games to play. They were due to face Illogan RBL last night (Tuesday), but have three games against sides in mid-table positions including Perranwell (home), St Day (away) and Troon (away). Added to that their is also the home game against Falmouth Town to be played, at a date to be confirmed.

However, just because Penryn have the easier run-in doesn’t of course make them favourites. Falmouth still have their games in hand and could go three points clear if they win them.

It really is a title race, which is too close to call. One prediction I will make though is that it will be the most exciting one around. Expect a few twists and turns before the season’s finale.
