Samaritans in Cornwall has received over £500,000 in funding to make significant changes to its facilities.
It was awarded £495,000 from the Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) and received an additional £15,000 from The Duchy Health Charity.
The charity will use the money to revamp its building at Treyew Road in Truro and to construct a new training centre.
The SPF investment comes through the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Community Organisation Fund, managed by Cornwall Council and financed by the UK Government.
For over half a century, Samaritans of Cornwall at Truro has worked towards reducing the incidence of suicidal feelings through active listening.
Despite its efforts, the organisation has identified that its current premises is lacking in accessibility and is no longer adequate, requiring vital capital work.
Sue Wilkins, voluntary director of Cornwall Samaritans, said: "We are extremely grateful to The Duchy Health Charity and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for their kind support.
"These grants mean that work can now begin, with a completion target of next Spring."
She expressed her gratitude to all who have sanctioned its capital appeal to kickstart the work.
Louis Gardner, portfolio holder for economy at Cornwall Council, said: ""Community and place is an investment priority of the Shared Prosperity Fund, and this grant will enable the charity to reach more volunteers, partners and provide a vital service to the community.""
Barbara Vann, chair of Duchy Health Charity, applauded Samaritans’ foresight and stated they were glad to help the charity achieve their aim of upgrading the facility.
Ms Wilkins added: "Our capital development will deliver a positive impact across all of our work, safeguarding our charity for the future."
She admitted that the charity responds to over 20,000 calls for help each year via phone and webchat.
The refurbishment is hoped to attract new volunteers, enhance technology use, and extend their outreach into the community.
The end goal is to increase the diversity of Cornwall Samaritans’ workforce, enabling the charity to reach those in need whenever required.
