THE funeral service has taken place at Treswithian Downs Crematorium for Delphine James of Carnkie, Redruth, who died suddenly at the home on November 11, aged 89. The service was conducted by Rev Jim Hunkin.

Delphine was born in 1927 at home in Chariot Road, Barncoose, Redruth, the middle child of three. She initially attended Lanner School before moving to Hicks Mill at which time she transferred to Perranwell School. There she gained a scholarship to Truro Grammar School. After moving to Halabezzack Farm, she relocated to Helston Grammar School, where she met her lifelong friend Doreen. She matriculated in 1943 and took up a place of study at Southlands College, Wimbledon to study teaching.

While at college she was a keen tennis player and actually played on centre court at Wimbledon. During her time at Southlands College, due to the continued bombing of London, she was evacuated to Weston Super Mare. After graduating from college she moved back to Cornwall to take up her first teaching post at Coverack, following this she taught at East End (Gweal-an-top) School.

In 1949 she married Jack at Penmarth Methodist Chapel, Carnmenellis and they initially lived at Caddy’s Corner in Carnmenellis in a converted railway carriage. After this they moved to Carnkie, Redruth in 1956 - another property which initially had no running water or electricity and a toilet at the end of the garden - the house soon became a busier place with their six children

When the children were a little older Delphine worked for a number of years for Rank Bush in Illogan Highway. Soon after finishing her employment there she became a full time carer for her ailing husband Jack who passed in 1985.

Delphine developed a taste for travel visiting many countries with her sister Violet including Italy, Spain, Austria and a trip across Canada. She continued to live at the same address in Carnkie, Redruth until her death.

Donations totalling £218.30 were accepted for Cornwall Air Ambulance.
