It’s as clear as Black and White that the new joint exhibition between Beside the Wave Gallery and Falmouth Art Gallery is set to be a striking success.

In November 1894 the first Falmouth Art Gallery, situated in Grove Place, held a ground-breaking ‘Black and White’ exhibition. Described by the Falmouth Packet as ‘a striking novelty’ and ‘the first of its kind held in Cornwall’, it featured prints and works in charcoal, pen and ink and wash by some of the best-known artists of the time.

Among the names singled out in the reviews were Sir Frederick Leighton, J McNeill Whistler and Percy Jacomb-Hood as well as local artists Henry Scott Tuke and Charles Napier Hemy who displayed rarely seen works in these mediums.

Falmouth Art Gallery, on The Moor, presents an exhibition celebrating this innovative show by bringing together many of the original exhibiting artists with a pick of some of the best artists working in black and white in the region today.

Across town in Arwenack Street, you can see a contemporary take on the show featuring some of the gallery’s favourite artists.

Miles Heseltine, Amanda Hoskin, Alasdair Lindsay, Sarah Wimperis and Paul Wadsworth all come together in this fantastic collection.

This is a chance to see another aspect of the work of some of the gallery’s best known artists.
