Helston Railway has finally reopened after all Covid restrictions were lifted, allowing the public to be welcomed on site and onto the train.

The team said that so far there had been good numbers of visitors and on various days there have had to be extra trains laid on to cope with demand.

The refurbished buffet area in the diesel multiple unit had proved popular now that it is located adjacent to the car park, on a newly laid section of track with seating inside and out.

This is open Wednesday to Sunday inclusive from 9.30am to 4.30pm serving breakfast, lunches and afternoon cream teas as well as snacks, drinks, homemade cakes and ice creams. Look up Cornish Carriages on Facebook for further details.

Immediately behind this is the railway shop and booking office, where apart from tickets to travel there is a variety of souvenirs, models and other goods available.

A short walk alongside the line is the platform and the newly arrived Peckett 2000 locomotive can be found, providing the power to take the train along the line to Truthall Halt and return.

Colin Savage, the railway's general manager, said: "Visitors comments have been very positive and their enthusiasm is certainly very infectious, which will spur on the hard working volunteers as the railway continues to expand and advance towards Helston.

"The railway is at a very exciting stage and new volunteers are always welcome so the expansion and visitor experience can continue to grow.

"The operating group are eager to attract local people, schools and like minded organisations to support and push the project forward and there are exciting plans to provide a real public asset, which Helston can feel proud of and join in with."

The railway is currently running visitor days on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday with the first train out at 10.30am. See the Helston Railway Facebook page for more details.
