The Eden Project is looking to expand its accommodation for visitors with plans to convert a car park into a new camping and glamping site.

A planning application for the change of use of the site has been submitted to Cornwall Council.

Under the proposals the attraction wants to use the Strawberry Field Car Park to create 12 pitches, which would be used for camping and caravans. A design and access statement submitted with the application says it wants to create “an attractive camping site”.

Of the 12 pitches it states: “These will be spaced out across the carpark with the side strip of land being levelled slightly to allow for caravans and Airstreams to be sited. A designated car park area will be located to the side of the site and separated by a line of trees relocated from elsewhere on the Eden Project site.

“In the centre of the pitches, a new landscaped garden will be formed, to bring greenery, planting and picnic areas to the site. New designated pathways will be formed throughout the site, which will be lit with downward directing light posts, with general landscaping throughout. To the far end where the services are, two showers and WCs will be formed.”

There were formerly “snooze pods” on the site, which have now been removed to make way for the new camping site.

No objections to the planning application have been received from statutory consultees with St Blaise Town Council offering no objection and Treverbyn Parish Council indicating that they support the application.

Si Bellamy, chief activation officer at the Eden Project, said: “We are working in partnership with YHA (England & Wales) to provide Airstreams, bell tents and Landpods as accommodation on a central location within our wider site. A planning application has been made and we are in regular contact with Cornwall Council and the parish councils and now await a decision. The accommodation is not being used at present.”

The Eden Project’s website lists accommodation which is available at the attraction, describing it as having been “redesigned as a camping and glamping location for 2022, offering the perfect opportunity to get close to nature”.

Accommodation options include Airstreams for two or three people; premium bell tents for up to five people and Landpods for up to four people.

It also explains that there will be “wild camping” available from YHA during the Eden Sessions this summer offering camping space for up to 30 people who have to provide their own tents.
