The life and music of the legendary Matt Monro will be celebrated by his son at The Princess Pavilion in Falmouth this autumn.

Matt Monro Junior gives an unforgettable show that’s full to the brim with music, warmth and love, keeping the memory of the man who was known as ‘the man with the golden voice’ alive.

Frank Sinatra once said: “Matt Monro is one of the finest male vocalists in the singing business.”

Matt Junior has joined his father’s trade but is modest about his talent.

“I’ve always said if I had half my dad’s talent I would still be a very gifted man,” he said.

The moving biographical show combines nostalgia and personal memories of the late, great Matt Monro.

Matt bears a strong resemblance to his father and this show visits his father’s most memorable songs mixed together with countless stories that go hand in hand with the music.

Matt performs his father’s iconic hits such as Born Free, Walk Away and Portrait Of My Love, together with some of the music his father wrote and sang for films including the Bond film From Russia With Love and Michael Caine’s The Italian Job.

It all began for his father when George Martin invited him to make a demo. George asked for a recording for Peter Sellers in the voice and style of Frank Sinatra for Peter’s album Songs for the Swinging Sellers.

Peter was intending to use the demo as a kind of style guide to copy the tone from but, after hearing it, then decided that he couldn’t improve on the track and so added it to the album.

It became such a popular track that George subsequently signed Matt to Parlophone.

Between March 1960 and January 1966 Parlophone released 19 Matt Monro singles, eight EPs and four LPs.

When Nat King Cole died, Capitol Records sought a replacement in Matt and he cracked USA.

When Matt Monro Jnr was only 13 years old he was invited by his father to join him on stage and perform a duet with him. From that moment on he knew that he wanted to be a singer.

Matt said: “I’ve come a long way since I first started in the business and feel like I have achieved my dream of becoming an artist in my own right.”

The upcoming tour sees him performing at 50 venues across the country.

He said: “I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited about an upcoming tour.

“It’s going to be incredible.

“I love meeting the fans after the show and I am always knocked out at the love they still have for my father.

“I always get very emotional and this year will not be any different, I can’t wait.”

Later this year Matt plans to record a more acoustic album to be called A Father’s Legacy.

The Matt Monro Story will take place on November 16 at the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth.
