The biggest ever Bank Holiday Tag Rugby Tournament took place at Lusty Glaze Beach over the bank holiday weekend.

This year’s competition was fierce with 56 teams competing from all over the UK.

The Newbury Old Boys were the stars of the weekend. They took the trophy for the one-day knockout event on the Friday and went on to beat Purple Cobras to be crowned champions of the overall tournament in a gripping floodlit finale.

Hundreds of locals and holiday makers enjoy the three-day event that is dedicated to Dominic Swanson.

Dominic was a budding rugby player from Newquay who tragically lost his life in an accident in 2000.

A one-minute silence was held in his honour before the final match on Sunday.

It is the 18th year that the cove has held its annual beach rugby tournament.

Staff at the beach said it was one of the busiest ever events at the cove as spectators and families gathered to soak up the sun, waves and sporting atmosphere over the three-day weekend.

Owner of Lusty Glaze Beach Tracey Griffiths said: “It’s been great to see lots of new and familiar faces from previous tournaments.

“There’s a real sense of community and camaraderie, and it’s great to see everyone coming together to support such a fantastic event.

“I always look forward to this weekend - it’s a real feel-good, family event and the beach is always buzzing with fun and laughter.”

The winning team from Berkshire was presented with medals and a trophy at Sunday evening’s closing party.

Local party-starters Cyderfex had the crowd dancing on the sand after a spectacular firework display lit up the Cornish cove.
