Every evening around 6pm the sacred smell of chargrilled meat wafts gently on the breeze towards my patio windows. This isn’t the smell of any old meat, it’s the beautiful aroma of prime steak cooking in The Ranch in Events Square.

I try not to eat too much red meat, but every now and then this aroma lures me into The Ranch for my monthly meat hit. Fortunately we live close enough to walk there. One of the things I like about The Ranch is their meat is lovingly reared, hung and dry aged for 28 days to achieve the most amazing flavour.

This place is a mecca for meat lovers, an altar to steak. The range of different cuts include melt-in-the-mouth short and long racks of pork ribs, buffalo wings and lovely homemade marinades.

The classic steak cuts such as fillet, rib eye, rump and sirloin are succulent and full of flavour, but it's the juicy, man-sized steaks that steal the show including T-bone, Boston Chop, and Chateau Briand – which are all authentically chargrilled to mouth-watering perfection. There is also a daily ‘Butchers Block’ specials board and a clever kids menu.

Mrs C has not eaten red meat since she was nine years old (obviously a difficult child). She now eats only chicken and fish but still has many options to choose from at The Ranch. The Falafel & halloumi fritter burger is one of her favourites, which comes on a Brioche bun, with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickle, coleslaw and sweet chilli sauce, and served with skin-on fries (£10). There is also the fish of the day to fall back on. Red wine is synonymous with eating steak so I always choose a glass (or two) of fine Malbec to accompany my sirloin steak. (£21). Meanwhile, Mrs C’s penchant for Prosecco continues with gusto at The Ranch, with a constant supply of petite bottles of her favourite fizz.

The elemental scent of meat being cooked over fire dates back roughly two million years, and remains part of our culinary DNA. I firmly believe that if you are serving beef in a restaurant it has to be good beef and cooked with love. The days of eating tough old meat at your local high street steakhouse are thankfully long gone. Now we have options. Good steak is never cheap but The Ranch manages to serve-up good value for money food which is why it remains one of my favourite local restaurants.

My only suggestion is they should introduce a take-out service and call it ‘Steak-Away!’
