A tale of sails, smugglers, and sailors' superstitions, based around Falmouth's own packet ships, will be coming to the Poly this weekend.

Canvas and Rum, by Cornwall-based NorthSouth Theatre, is a tale set in the 1800s which sails between the South Sea Whalers and the historical Falmouth packet ships, looking at the life of an old shell-backer who had to urgently leave his home in Cornwall. The old sea dog takes on the duty of teaching a green-hand the ropes on board.

Two months ago NorthSouth used the Packet to put out a request for a Falmouth venue, due to the piece's links with the packet ships that sailed out of Falmouth, and the Poly answered the call.

Jason Gerdes, the company's co artistic director, said: "Inspired by the ocean and based on historical figures and events in Falmouth, Canvas and Rum is a maelstrom of live foley, shanties, sirens, sails and superstitious sailors. "So come and join our voyage but beware there are monsters in the deep."

Canvas and Rum is at the Poly on August 27, and tickets are available from www.thepoly.org
