Pipeline Theatre is bringing an acclaimed love story featuring a live robot to the Tolmen Centre.
The Falmouth-based theatre company is touring its third show, Spillikin, which tells the story of a woman with Alzheimers and her relationship with a robot made by her husband.
The play follows Sally, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimers. Her husband, Raymond, is dying. A leading robotics specialist, he decides to create a robot version of himself to keep his wife company after his death. The robot, Spillikin, is an endlessly patient memory-jogger and singing partner, but as Sally’s mind fades the production explores whether the robot will be more of a comfort or a threat.
To create Spillikin, Pipeline Theatre collaborated with Engineered Arts, a leading Penryn-based robotics company, to bring one of their world-renowned ‘RoboThespians’ to the stage.
Artistic director and designer for Pipeline, Alan Munden, said: “Making work about what you know or desire to better understand, I think lends it integrity. My mother has Alzheimers. I am frightened when I try to imagine her experience, but intrigued and excited to manifest it on stage, and wish I had the patience of a robot.”
Pipeline Theatre's Spillikin will be at the Tolmen Centre on Wednesday, October 19 at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £8 and are available from the box office on 01326 341353, or online at tolmencentre.co.uk.
Suitable for over 14's.
