A Pint Sized Conversation is theatre piece about depression by Falmouth dramatist Dylan Frankland.
The performance places personal stories about supporting people with depression in the limelight, going against the quiet stigma around mental health by accepting its chaotic side.
Dylan, who is from Falmouth, developed a piece that he hoped would benefit his community, and described it as a “loud, messy and sometimes ugly” take on depression.
The production is written from the point of view of a close friend or relative of someone who suffers from depression.
Dylan said: “For anyone supporting someone with depression, it’s sad but also very frustrating, and you have moments when you’re just like ‘come on’.
“It’s about recognising that feeling and knowing it’s valid but not giving in to it.”
It has received arts council funding and the production is just about to on a tour throughout the South West and London, which kicks off at the Driftwood Spars pub.
Speaking about the choice of venue, Dylan said: “Often you take a theatre or performing space, you know what kind of audience you’re going to get.
“As you go into a pub people talk about everything, but what they don’t talk about is mental health.
“So the aim was to bring mental health into everyday places.”
The piece hopes to attract a variety of people to the show, not just the regular theatre-goers, and so it will operate on a “pay what you decide” model instead of a set ticket price.
Sarah Knight of Rethink Mental Illness, a charity that aims to change the public perception of mental health, described the performance as “powerful and enlightening”.
The PRSD called the piece: “Angry but uplifting; powerless but empowering, sad, but ultimately upbeat; defiant”.
Dylan is the co-artistic creator of Kill the Cat Theatre, who were winners of the Bike Shed Theatre’s Graduate Residency 2016/17.
The shows will run at the Driftwood Spars Pub on April 21 and 22 starting at 7.30pm.
