WITH a sensational 4,000-plus local people having already taken the trouble to sign the Save the Rec petition, surely Carrick district council and the Falmouth town council cannot continue with their idea to build on the ground. Carrick now admit that only 40 per cent of the mass development will be affordable on what is already a poor traffic/environmental area. This is a low return for all the controversy it is attracting.

I thought a previous correspondent who suggested tastefully developing the poor quality pitches at Dracaena Avenue instead, was a far better idea. It certainly begs the question: are Carrick really interested in helping local families have an affordable house? Or are they indeed putting the rugby club first? Carrick could put a lot more families in houses with the much larger Dracaena idea.

Personally I think Carrick have dug themselves into a deep hole by going so far and spending so much money on plans and expensive options without any public consultation. Also, they must now feel under pressure from Kerrier who totally ignored public opinion in carrying out their considerable part in this.

The bottom line is this: are we being run by a small group of dictators who believe in standing by decisions against overwhelming public opinion? I trust the councillors who are behind this still believe in democracy and are big enough to call the development in and look at the other sites at their disposal.

PS: I foolishly doubted that the Save the Rec Campaign had received so many signatures. Having been shown them on request, I was also shown the solitary letter of objection. It was sent anonymously but the envelope bore a postal frank mark from, can you believe it, the Council Offices, Truro!
