Proud Falmothians who stood against Falmouth Harbour Commissioners and their plans to disfigure the Custom House Quay basin with a rash of small boat berths are this week celebrating a 'valiant victory' in their battle.

But, your pal the Skipper has to ask, for just how long?

While the commissioners have retreated for now, withdrawing the application in the face of popular opinion and a U-turn from Historic England, it is merely to consider "the next steps."

The company has said it will be meeting with some of the objectors tomorrow to hear feedback, but I can't imagine there will be much space for compromise between the two groups: one side adamant that a key part of Falmouth's maritime heritage remain unspoilt, the other in need of a cash boost and keen to monetise as much of that heritage as possible.

Would a 40, 30 or even 20 berth marina be small enough to satisfy the campaigners? Or large enough to turn a profit?
