WENDRON 1 ILLOGAN 1

ILLOGAN'S Jolly's Combination League title bid suffered a setback at Underlane when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wendron.

This was a game that both sides had the chances to win, but at the end of 90 minutes will probably feel that one point was a satisfactory enough reward.

The home side made a lively start and took the game to league leaders with Lee Gribble cutting inside and hitting his shot against the bar.

In a match that had a number of controversial refereeing decisions throughout, Wendron had a strong appeal for what looked a clear-cut penalty turned down minutes later when Gribble got past a defender and then appeared to be clearly taken down by another as he made his run for goal, but surprisingly nothing was given.

Midway through the half Illogan deservedly took the lead when Justin Searle fed Mike O'Neill who outstripped the defence and took the ball around Burrows before scoring from a narrow angle.

Illogan created a couple of openings through Ryan Treloar and Andy Cowper, but it was Illogan who had a let off in the 33rd minute when Gribble drew the last defender and slipped a pass inside to Sean Johnston who saw Danny Burrows save his effort.

Burrows rescued his side again when he dropped the ball from a Sean Johnston corner, but he retrieved the situation when diving bravely at the feet of Adam Toy.

It was Illogan who needed to up the tempo in the second half with Scoffin making two fine saves from Simon Carter and Treloar.

Illogan had a huge let off when Gribble beat the offside trap, but as Burrows came racing out of goal he clattered into the player to halt his progress. Despite being the last man Burrows, surprisingly, only received a yellow card.

Although Illogan had plenty of possession they never seriously threatened until eventually snapping up the equaliser 15 minutes from time when Treloar hit a speculative 25-yard cross-cum-shot which went over the 'keeper and in off the far post.

Both sides might have gone for a winner, but neither was willing to risk the point they had as the teams settled for a honourable draw.

"Over the 90 minutes I thought a draw was a fair result," said manager Steve Webber. "On another day we might have won had some of the referee's decisions gone the other way, especially with the goalkeeper bringing down Lee Gribble when he was the last man and the penalty that wasn't given.

"No-one wants to see players sent off and at the end of the day you have to go along with the referee."

On Saturday Wendron are home to Perranporth.
