Flushing and Mylor Pilot Gig Club celebrated the official opening of its new boathouse with a huge turnout from members, friends, local dignitaries and residents.

The youngest and oldest of the club were joined by Sarah Newton MP in officially opening the boathouse whilst chairman Simon Thompson thanked all the people and organisations who had helped in the funding and construction of the new building.

Those included in Mr Thompson’s speech were Sport England for funding the project, CSA architects who designed the boathouse, Nicholas Trefusis for allowing the project to be built on his land and the parish council for its support.

Others mentioned were Blake Construction, British Rowing and Sita Cornwall Trust for helping with equipment and future boat projects and past and present committee members for their time and effort dedicated towards the application processes over the last three years.

Nankersey Male Voice Choir entertained at a champagne reception after the opening ceremony and food was served on the beach.

A gig racing display was scheduled to take place but unfortunately the weather and sea conditions proved too adverse.

However, the club looks forward to being able to put on a regatta in the near future now that their new boathouse is fully operational.
