PUPILS from Roskear Primary School in Camborne recently had a taste of what it would be like to fly in the Navy.

During the launch of the Crofty learning Trust, the partnership between six West Cornwall Primary Schools, several professionals from the local area came to talk to the year five and six pupils including an observer from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose.

Lieutenant Andy Mitchell (28), an observer instructor from 750 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Culdrose gave a presentation about life in the Royal Navy to the pupils of Falmouth Class at Roskear School.

Andy talked about the different types of aircraft flown at the Cornish Airbase and the roles they perform both at home and abroad when deployed with the Royal Navy.

He explained what it’s like to fly a Helicopter from a ship at sea and live and work onboard a Royal Navy Frigate or Destroyer. After the presentation and a question and answer session, the class then took part in a team-building exercise which involved getting dressed up in full flying gear.

Morgan Thomas (9) said: “I leant that helicopters can rescue people who are in trouble and that the Merlin helicopter is based at Culdrose”.

Morgan’s classmate Katrina Simpson (10) said: “I leant about the different uses of helicopters and what uniform is worn when flying”.

Throughout the day, pupils from all six schools had talks from professionals including doctors, fire-fighters and scientists.
